Teenager Discovered Deceased After Untrue Allegations of Taking Cremated Remains

A 14-year-old youth was found dead only a few days after being falsely blamed of taking the ashes of a dead infant during a burglary, an inquest has heard.

Tragic Finding

Kai Lloyd's mother and father discovered his remains in his bedroom at his Flintshire home on November 19th, 2021.

False Allegations Begin

The inquest learned how his mother got a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if her son was her child. The communication stated: "Inform him appreciation for breaking into my flat."

In a statement read to the court, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the media, asserting her baby's remains had been stolen in a break-in - a allegation which was untrue.

Police Inquiry

An investigation report from authorities later determined the supposed burglary victim had "provided false information" and "it now appears that said property was never stolen in the first place".

Media reports about the supposed stolen ashes generated online comments, and although Kai was not named in the messages, his mother said individuals "understood it was him".

When she talked to him about the alleged incident, she said her son informed her he had entered the house because the woman who lived there had said he could utilize the toilet whenever he wanted, but refuted taking anything.

Online Harassment

In a joint statement between her and her spouse, the mother said her son was being bullied digitally after the accusations.

The inquest heard that a 19-year-old urged Kai to end his life.

She had no worries on the night before he died, explaining how she had listened to him "laughing and joking".

She portrayed him as a "caring, affectionate" boy, and said her "relatives is totally devastated".

He had been "clearly hiding his worries", she stated, noting that he could not bear to have anyone "think bad of him".

School Response

The hearing heard from school personnel at the local High School.

On November 8th, she "heard some students talking that the student had been arrested and that was the initial I heard".

"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.

After the discussion, the staff member said she rang the family's parents' landline and left a voicemail saying she had spoken to the student about the allegations.

The court learned his parents said they did not receive that message.

Formal Conclusion

Senior investigator informed the inquest he would wait for reports regarding what enhancements had been made to handling suspects with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a avoidance of future fatalities report.

Delivering a narrative finding, he said: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsupported accusations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a young child.

The official concluded: "There is no evidence that the acts or failures of any agency led to or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a personal act it is not possible to discern his intent."
