While global delegates assemble at the international climate summit, concurrent gatherings are taking place in proximity to strengthen viewpoints often overlooked from official proceedings.

Native Communities Gather for Public Assembly

Members of Amazonian aboriginal groups came together at local university for the opening of a parallel Public Assembly.

Images showed participants dancing, chanting and interacting at the event, on the grounds of the Federal University of Para, just a couple of miles from the conference centre where the UN climate summit is occurring.

"Here we are listened to, here our concerns are taken seriously," remarked one representative at the event.

Significant Setting for Environmental Summit

This current climate conference represents the first meeting being organized in the Amazon region, a symbolic decision by the Brazilian government, in measure to ensure that Indigenous peoples have a larger presence.

Concerns and Demonstrations

Despite these measures, some have however felt marginalized from negotiations, discontent which contributed to a confrontation when activists tried to push through into the conference's controlled, official participants only section.

Advocates of the demonstration used a public statement at the civil assembly to defend the demonstration, saying it was aimed at show the desperation of their fight for forest protection.
